Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A ninth-grade girl admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital was allegedly molested by a janitor on Saturday night. The accused, identified as Binod Pandit, a contractual cleaning staff member and resident of Raynagar under Diamond Harbour Municipality, was arrested on Tuesday night following a complaint from the victim’s family.
The girl, a resident of Netra, was admitted to the hospital earlier that evening and later shifted to the CCU as her condition worsened. The victim reportedly disclosed the incident to her mother when her family visited on Monday. Her parents immediately approached both the hospital authorities and Diamond Harbour police station, lodging an official complaint. Acting on the report, police launched an investigation and arrested the accused. The victim has undergone a medical examination as part of the probe, and legal proceedings are underway.
Authorities are verifying CCTV footage, questioning staff, and reviewing security protocols to determine how the incident occurred inside a high-dependency medical unit. While the hospital administration has yet to comment, police officials confirmed that a case has been registered, and further inquiry is in progress. The accused is in custody and is expected to be produced in court soon. The incident has raised serious concerns about patient security in sensitive hospital areas.
